How to Fit a Roman blind
For a Sidewinder / Crank Mechanism
STEP 1
Decide the fixing position for your roman blind.
For fitting inside the window reveal
The sidewinder brackets allow for the headrail to be fixed to the wall or the ceiling of a recess (top fix).
Tip: Ensure that the blind is far enough away from the window handles to prevent obstruction.
For fitting outside the window reveal
This relates to the specified measurements of your made-to-measure blind. Check your chosen positioning by holding your blind up to the window before fitting.
STEP 2
Detach the brackets from the headrail by pressing the spring-clip fastening at the top front of the bracket. Position the brackets at least 30mm in from the ends of the headrail. Hold each up to the required positioning on the wall/reveal top and mark the screw positions. Ensure that all brackets are level and carefully aligned before drilling and plugging holes. Then fix the brackets.
Note: The top of the headrail sits approximately 4mm below the top of the bracket.
STEP 3
Detach the roman blind from the metal headrail by peeling it from the Velcro fastening - allowing the blind to hang by the strings in the meantime.
STEP 4
Now clip the headrail into place. To do this, hold up the headrail with the Velcro facing towards you, hook the front lip of the headrail into the spring-clip on the front of the brackets and ensure they are pressed in. Then click the back lip of the headrail into the back clips on the brackets.
STEP 5
Re-attach the top of the roman blind to the headrail aligning the Velcro strips.
Note: Need to tweak the blind strings? To straighten the roman blind strings, let the blind down to the closed position. Adjust the toggles so the strings are just beginning to take the weight of the blind. Raise the blind using the chain mechanism, check the hem is straight and adjust further if necessary. For blinds with more than 2 strings, adjust the outside strings first, while the others remain slacker, then adjust the intermediate strings.
IMPORTANT: The chain loops on blind sidewinder mechanisms can be a strangulation hazard to children and vulnerable people. The blind is supplied with a plastic chain connector which will cause the chain to break away when it comes under excessive tension. If the chain does break, it can be re-joined by clipping the chain back into the connector. The chain should finish at least 60cm from the floor.
For a Corded Mechanism
STEP 1
Decide the fixing position for your roman blind.
For fitting inside the window reveal
The wooden batten allows for the headrail to be fixed to the window frame or to the top of the recess (top fix).
Tip: Ensure that the blind is far enough away from the window handles to prevent obstruction.
For fitting outside the window reveal
This relates to the specified measurements of your made-to-measure roman blind. Check your chosen positioning by holding your blind up to the window before fitting.
STEP 2
Detach the roman blind from the wooden batten by peeling it from the Velcro fastening - allowing the blind to hang by the strings in the meantime. This allows you to see clearly the positioning for the batten.
STEP 3
Hold up the wooden batten to the required positioning on the wall/reveal top and mark the appropriate screw positions on the wall and on the batten. Ensure that the batten is level and carefully aligned before drilling and plugging holes. Then fix to the wall/reveal top.
STEP 4
Re-attach the top of the roman blind to the batten aligning the Velcro strips.
Note: Need to tweak the blind strings? To straighten the blind strings, let the blind down to the closed position. With the cord weight threaded over the strings but not knotted, and holding the strings between thumb and forefinger, raise the blind using the side cords. Check the hem is straight and adjust until the blind hem is straight, then take up the slack on any intermediate strings. Now knot the cords together at a suitable height for reaching when the blind is closed. Check the operation of the blind before cutting off excess string.
STEP 5
Now fix the cleat to the wall in vertical alignment with the weighted strings. To comply with safety law, the cleat should be installed at least 150cm from the floor. For larger blinds, in order to accommodate the excess cord, a second cleat may be installed above the first cleat.
IMPORTANT: The height of cleats and blind cords should be planned to be beyond the reach of small children and vulnerable people to avoid strangulation risk. Excess cord should always be tied neatly around the cleat(s). The blind cord should always be at least 150cm clear from the floor.
